So Fostering Creativity is still around! I promise! Things have been really busy and unfortunately designing got pushed to the way side there for a little while but not anymore!! I'm back and I have some great new designs for you!!!!

Now you have something else to look forward to! Stone Lotus Pottery and Fostering Creativity have teamed together to host a trunk show in December to show you all our fabulous items just in time to finish up (or start if you are a last minute kinda shopper) your Christmas shopping!

Eggs for Sale

Spring is just around the corner and with that comes Easter decorations as well as Spring Flowers!

One easy way to decorate for Easter is to add a few eggs around your house! You can take your standard spring arrangements and add a couple of eggs and you have an Easter arrangement that will last you through spring when you take the eggs out after Easter.

Here are a few examples of using eggs in your decorations.

We have snow today so I still have a little snow with my early spring display.

Tip Junkie Christmas Tree Challenge!

If you know much about me or Fostering Creativity you know that just the title of this post excited me! I LOVE LOVE LOVE decorating Christmas trees and in our small two bedroom condo we had four trees last Christmas and will have at least that many this Christmas!

Let me introduce you to my trees and how they have come about... a wonderfully decorated tree must always have a story to go with it!

The Main tree in our Home
Each year on the day after Thanksgiving my family goes to the mountains and picks out our own trees. We have been going since my mother hiked up the mountain very pregnant and I have not missed a "tree hunting" trip yet! So each tree is very special and is picked from the farm especially for our home. Here is our tree (from last year) among all the others in the field!

And with a little patience, lots of lights and an overflowing amount of love this seemingly simple tree from the field turns into a beautiful added decoration to our home.

This is a picture of the tree after decorating before the presents made it feel like home! Most of the ornaments have a story behind them as well; which makes decorating a fun event! My husband and I buy an ornament on every trip we take so as we decorate our tree we remember where we have been that year as well as years past.
Here is the one from our trip to Hawaii, it was our honeymoon!

Of course at our home a large bow on the top of the tree streaming down is the final perfect touch.

Here is the tree not feeling so lonely and surrounded by Christmas Joy!

The Carolina/State Tree
We have all heard of "a house divided" and here is our rendition as a "tree divided." My husband is a graduate of NC State University and I am a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill so in our guest room we have the divided tree!

The Carolina-State tree includes ornaments we have received, mostly as gifts, over the years because of our pledged allegiance to our Alma Maters.

This tree is complete with Carolina and State Santas and lights as well as a combined red and blue on top.

The Wedding Tree
In our entry way to our home we have a small wedding tree.

This tree contains ornaments received as a wedding gift signifying our marriage a couple of years ago!

The Crystal Tree
This tree has been in my bedroom since I was a young girl. My God Father started buying me a crystal ornament each year for Christmas and soon I had enough to fill a whole tree.

This is probably my favorite tree in the house. It is surrounded by snow globes as well!

Finally, the Fostering Creativity Tree
This tree was put up last month for my Home Show.

This tree was decorated with a uniformed theme. There were only a handful of different ornaments and then multiples of the same one with multiple dried stems placed throughout the tree. If there is anything you see on the tree you think would look perfect on your tree let me know, I still have many of the items available. You can see them in more detail in this post.

The Black and Silver Mini Tree

This year I added another tree to the mix and went with a mini real tree in our sunroom. This tree has a black and silver theme. There were just a few ornaments on the tree to keep a simple look. A few white lights and it coordinates with the decor in the sunroom.

This is the tree we put our presents around so they will be out of the way and not in the middle of the walkway in the den.

The first thing to decorating my trees is to put on the lights. I think a lot of lights makes a tree beautiful and as you can see I only use white lights (with the exception of the Carolina/State tree that has Carolina Blue and State Red hues to the lights because of the plastic coverings). Once we have added the lights, next I like to put all like ornaments on the tree at the same time. This ensures that they become evenly disbursed throughout the tree. The final key thing to remember when decorating trees are odd numbers are your friend! I tend to not have an even number of anything on a tree, they just look better in odd numbers!

Well since my best friend over at Stone Lotus Pottery did a feature on me, I feel that I should do the nice thing and feature her on my blog as well! I can tell you, this feature is not just because she is my friend. She and her mother have a wonderful business and fabulous items for sale ~ I know, I have already purchased 2 necklaces and have at least one or two more items coming! Not to mention the items her mother has made for me in the past before they were even Stone Lotus Pottery!

Holiday Open House

I have been asked to set up a table at a Holiday Open House and Market in Yadkinville on December 6th from 10am until 6pm. It will be at the Tasting Room for Allison Oaks Vineyards.

Here is what Allison Oaks Vineyards has to say:
"Come and enjoy a wonderful holiday experience. We will be sharing sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the season. Come and watch the Yadkinville Christmas parade as it passes by our front door. There will be local musicians playing holiday songs you grew up with.
Enjoy the fragrant smells of spiced mulled wine, fresh baked goods, and fresh cut evergreens. Taste our newly released wines along with our other wines, including mulled zinfandel. Enjoy tasting samples of baked goods, smoked pork, local cheeses, and other treats. There will be a holiday market in the banquet room consisting of food, artwork, crafts and more."

If you are interested in seeing what was left from my open house as well as some new arrangements please come! Even if you are not in the need for an arrangement come and visit the tasting room! It is new and their wine is wonderful. If you are local, this would be a wonderful place to host a Christmas party or any other gathering.

I will also be taking orders for stationery which is the perfect Christmas gift for office managers, hair dressers, massage therapists, friends and family.

Custom Floral Arrangement

My mother-in-law had me make a custom floral arrangement for her dining room table using her mother's crystal. Her mother had a wonderful collection of Fostoria Crystal and she wanted to display some of it on the table with a little flowers added for that extra touch. This arrangement was made using the

These cards are for our own Thanksgiving table and the papers are from Summertime Designs.

I do have a few items left for purchase! And remember, most of what you see cannot be reordered or recreated! They are the one and only! So if you just LOVE it, you should get it now! I had one client who couldn't decide between two arrangements and she picked one got home and decided she wanted the other one too and by the time she called the other one had already sold! She was so upset!

Let me tell you a little more about my business! Some of you are first time readers so I will put it all in one location for you!

I love paper and everything to do with paper. Ever since I was little I have always had personalized stationery. Yes, I was the child who had gift enclosures at the ripe 'ol age of 5. The Classic Note

Here are some simple flat printed, flat note cards. This is a very classic design that is good for those men out there that enjoy writing the personalized notes every now and then. They are also good for children. It is never too early to teach your child the importance of a handwritten thank you note. You can personalize this note also with your family name so everyone in the family can use them. Also, there are limitless possibilities (well almost) for what font you choose to also show your own personality. Also, the four colors shown below (chocolate, charcoal, blue and black) are not the only colors available. We can also customize the color to match your personality.

The notes are on white paper and come with white envelopes. The prices for the flat printed notes are $18.00 for sets of 15 and additional notes can be ordered in incriminates of 10 for $12.00.

Here is an arrangement I made for a dining room table. They have neutral walls and a deep red/cranberry window treatment. We wanted to tie in the red but not have it too overpowering. I hope she likes it!

For most of the stationery there are three prices...

For stationery that has been posted and is plain with no monogram or name the price is $12.00 for 10 note cards and envelopes.

For stationery that has been posted that is monogrammed with either a name, 3 initial monogram or single letter the price is $14.00 for 10 note cards and envelopes.

If you want more than 10 note cards they will all come in incriminates of 10 and you can order as many as you would like.

Finally, if there is something you want to custom create with your favorite colors or patterns (monogrammed or not) the price is $32.00 for 20 note cards and envelopes. Custom orders will have a minimum order of 20
(with more being ordered on incriminates of 10).

I had someone call me wanting a unique arrangement. She wanted a floral arrangement made with baby socks that look like little roses. With some research and lots of patience I finally got it together! Here is the final project! It was for a baby shower for a lady having a little boy.

In my research I also found that you can do this on a larger scale with onesies and blankets as well as the socks for a mixture of larger items!

So it is hard for me to believe that it is Friday all over again! I have not had much to post this week because of getting a new printer and to be completely honest... it is still in the box. Therefore, I have some designs but nothing has been printed.

Since I have not been getting much response from my Fun Fridays and nobody has any questions for me I am going to do it a little different today! I am going to ask you some questions.... and these are not for the sake of my health... I need your feedback.

So I am thinking about a new adventure for Fostering Creativity. For those newbies out there who may not know me I LOVE Christmas and Christmas decorations. I am going to create some Christmas arrangements and ideas on how you can spruce up your Christmas and winter decorations. After these ideas have become reality I am going to host a home show! Where everything I have will be available for purchase and orders will be taken. So... how many of you would be interested in coming to the very first home show for Fostering Creativity?

In addition to the "in vivo" home show I of course will be posting everything on here for purchase!

Fun Fridays (even though it is Sunday)

So after two weeks I am back to my fun Fridays! I did have this almost ready on Friday to post but things were really busy around here. So here is your Fun Friday, Sunday afternoon!

One question I seem to get often is... "When should I send out my invitations?"

So here is my thought on this subject. And after consulting with a few other stationary websites out there it seems to be the consensus.

It greatly varies on the type of invitation or card that you are sending for what the "rules" are. But then again, you have to remember, these are just suggestions. With all that is said and done I think it boils down to when do you want to send them and when do you have the time. I guess there is technically no right or wrong answer, just ones that are typically considered more proper.

Wedding Invitations

For wedding invitations you should typically send the invites 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. Additional time is appreciated by those who are attending destination weddings or weddings in a city in which having reservations far in advance is necessary. Keep in mind were your guests are traveling from and make sure that there is enough time for lodging arrangements to be made.

Informal Invitations

This would be the category that most parties or gatherings would fall into. Typical time for this would be 2-3 weeks. Where for a small dinner gathering 2 weeks should be plenty. Also, keep in mind the time of year. If you are planning a Christmas gathering on a Saturday in December you might want to err on the side of caution and send 3-4 weeks so your guest will not make other plans. But keep in mind, during the holidays you don't want to overwhelm your guests with too much or send the invitations too far in advance for fear of them unintentionally forgetting about the gathering.

Birth Announcements

Ideally these should be sent out immediately following the birth of a new baby. You are probably laughing right now wondering how in the world this can happen but it can, just plan ahead. In those last couple of months of pregnancy think about who you would want to welcome your new little bundle. Most places (myself included) will send you the envelopes ahead of time so that the tedious task of addressing them can happen at your leisure prior to a new baby's arrival. Additionally, you can have your announcement pre-made where you would add in the date, weight and length or you could have them "on call" from your designer. Where they will complete the last minute information when you call from the hospital. If this is something you are interested in let me know and we will be able to work together to impress all your friends and family by having a baby announcement in their mailbox within a week of your new baby's arrival!

Wedding Announcements

These should be sent out following the ceremony. Have them ready and addressed for one of your attendants put them in the mail for you the following day. This, however, is something that is not often seen much anymore. Most people tend to just put an announcement in the wedding section of the local newspaper.

Christmas Cards

The earlier the better on this one. The first Christmas cards received in the mail are often the ones that make the biggest impression! My personal goal each Christmas is to be the first Christmas card received! I always look forward to who sends the first card.

Thank You Notes

Again the sooner the better. My personal method on this one is to write the notes the same day as I receive the gift. I am more likely to forget about it unintentionally if I wait much longer! Another method I have tried in the past is to write the thank you note before I use the gift. Also, be personal in the notes. A nice handwritten note on stationary is always appreciated. It doesn't have to say much but the acknowledgment is all that is needed.

30th Birthday Invitation

Here is an update from the party...
The cake table! I had pictures of the birthday boy from now and his first birthday as well as one from his 7th birthday to show the younger years!

And I didn't do a good job of taking pictures of the rest of the tables. I hope someone did. I was too busy trying to decide if we were going to move the party indoors due to the impending rain. We kept it outside and it didn't rain!

An invite with matching detail "tent cards" for the food table. There will be cards for each of the food options as well as the drink options. Coordination is the key to a well done party.

Additionally, for this party there will be a custom cake with the invitation as a inspiration point (pictures to follow after the event) as well as coordinating yellow and green plates and napkins.

Gift Ideas for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is just around the corner so here are some ideas.

This is a simple arrangement in a tin container using green apples and very neutral flowers and leaves. This would be perfect on a coffee table (as shown in the picture) or on a side table with accessories. It is not a large piece so it could go about anywhere.

The next idea uses a Glass Trio Set that I love (which I received from The Last Straw in Blowing Rock, NC. It can be changed for every season so it is a very versatile gift. And for those of you who have a hard time coming up with creative ides, well they make books especially for this Glass Trio Set with ideas for you. Fun Fridays

I am going to start something new for each Friday (hopefully posting earlier in the day than this). You will find different quick tips, etiquette rules and other random thoughts for hosting and attending parties or events! Also, I am welcome to any questions that you would like answered. You can leave questions in the comments section or you can email me. I will then answer them the next week.

So for the first Fun Friday I am going to give you a quick tip!

You know that nasty taste and numbing of your tongue that you get after licking envelope after envelope for any mass mailings... wedding invitations, Christmas cards, party invitations, insert your next event here.

Well you can save yourself the nasty taste by having a glue stick handy. Rather than licking each envelope you can just run the glue stick along the glue portion of the flap, seal and call it a day! I find this much easier and MUCH faster than the paper towel and bowl of water trick.

And if you don't know that one (and of course if you don't have a glue stick handy) ~ get a bowl of water and some paper towels or a sponge and use them rather than your tongue! This saves the nasty taste but I warn you. If you are not careful you can get the envelope too wet (or not wet enough to seal) as well as cause your ink from the address to bleed.

So you pick your method. Let me know what you think works best for you!

Make sure to check out the April specials before completing your order because they are always really great! Then contact me and I will create a floral arrangement to fit in with your home.

A front door arrangement. This beautiful "Flower Market Door Bucket" (item number 40664) is versatile. As it is shown in the picture it is perfect for spring and summer. In the fall you could do a fall leaf arrangement and then at Christmas you could do pine and perhaps lights. Finally, for winter you could do a "snow" theme.

Here is the "Olive Jar Trio" (item number 41027). This group of three has been separated out on the mantel in this home. It could also be grouped with all three together.

Here is the "Verona Olive Jar" (item number 40805) that I have sitting beside my fireplace with a combination of green leaves and natural sticks.

You will notice the fireplace screen in the background (item number 40496) can also be purchased from Southern Living at Home.

And the "Hemingway Hurricane" (item number 40350) with a simple grass and moss creation.

The "Astoria Canisters" (item number40856). Here is a Easter theme. At Christmas I had different red and white candies in the jars with Gingerbread Men surrounding them.

Finally, the "Red Mountain Entertaining Bucket and Stand" (item numbers bucket: 40672 stand 40673). This is in my dining room with a beautiful fern and grass arrangement.

I have been busy with new spring arrangements today.

This is the front table in the entrance to our home. This is a simple arrangement using a glass bowl I found in an antique store with a pink geranium.

I loved the arrangement I made for a client so much when it was in my guest room awaiting it's time to go home that I made a smaller version to keep for myself!

This is actually our guest room.

Here is a close up of the flowers. It is sitting on my husband's chess board.

I needed to revamp my mantel for spring so I added some great spring flowers to the wooden
box that stays on the mantel.

Wooden boxes are a great addition to any room. This box has been used for most seasons.

Here are some water bottles I made for a baby shower. They matched the napkins and had the baby's name and arrival date!

I also made some for our wedding. I will look for a picture of those as well. They were a little more formal.

I made these invitations for a graduation/birthday party. The guest of honor was turning 30 and just completed his MBA program at WFU, hence the color scheme.

The poem on the invite was written by my friend, it was her husband's party.
